Giving you the chance to feel truly heard and accepted
Hi, I'm Janet, a counsellor who works with adults aged 18 plus. I work face to face in Acomb, York, and online UK wide. I have experienced mental health difficulties myself and am passionate about helping others to overcome their challenges.
Life can be difficult and sometimes we all need support. I work with a wide range of issues and have a special interest in working with autistic clients, those with ADHD and parent carers to neurodivergent children.

I am a person centred counsellor, meaning that I believe you are the expert on yourself. I work in a way which enables you to talk freely about your life, without fear of judgment. This allows you to talk openly about your experiences, gaining a deeper understanding into what is going on. In turn, this enables you to move towards a fulfilled life, with improved mental health.
I work collaboratively with you, at your pace, enabling you to find a way forwards without me telling you what to do. You choose what you want to talk about in our sessions and there is no expectation on you to talk about anything you do not feel comfortable sharing with me.
I have a particular interest in working with autistic clients and those who have ADHD. I have undertaken additional training in these areas, in order to best support people. In addition to this, I am Mum to two neurodivergent young people. I draw upon this experience in my work, whilst also recognising that everyone is different.
I work in a neuro affirming way, with people who have a formal diagnosis, those who are self diagnosed and those who are questioning whether or not they might be neurodivergent. Clients often come to me feeling low and anxious after a lifetime of being made to feel ashamed of who they are. I work with people to help them understand what has shaped these feelings, enabling them to move towards living a better life.
I also work with parent carers, helping them to process their own unique experiences of parenting neurodivergent children. I understand the challenges that can arise from trying to navigate complex systems in an attempt to get support.
Both of my children went through long periods of time where they were unable to cope with the pressures of the education system. This brought up many negative emotions and experiences for me. I felt isolated and not good enough. I can work with you to help you understand your own experiences and enable you to feel supported.
I have experience in working with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression and burnout.

I am Mum to two neurodivergent young adults and have faced huge challenges in getting the right support for them over the years. My experiences often led to me feeling unheard, unsupported and unfairly judged. Ultimately these experiences led me to train to become a counsellor. I care deeply about giving people the time to be seen, heard and supported in a non judgemental way.
I am a creative person and in my spare time I enjoy many hobbies, including sewing, knitting and spinning. I love being out in nature and wild swimming. I have a lifelong love of reading.
I have previously worked as a director for Kindlewoods CIC, a social enterprise focused on nature and mental health. I have also worked as a support worker for adults with both learning and physical disabilities.
I am a fully qualified counsellor and have a degree in psychology. I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work to their ethical guidelines. I undertake regular supervision to ensure that I am working to a high standard.

I work from a log cabin in the grounds of Acomb Methodist Church. There is limited free parking in the church car park, free on road parking and also free parking at Morrisons in Acomb. There are bus stops close by too. I am easily accessible from throughout York and the wider North Yorkshire area.
In addition to providing face-to-face therapy, I also offer online sessions for clients throughout the UK. Online therapy has been shown to be as effective as in person therapy.
Sessions are £50 and last for 50 minutes. They can be held either weekly, or fortnightly, depending on your preference. I work both face to face and online. I work from 9 o'clock until 4 o'clock on Tuesdays and 11 o'clock until 2 o'clock on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
I offer both short and long term therapy, depending on your needs. I suggest a minimum of 6 sessions to begin with.
I offer a free, no obligation introductory call to find out whether we are the right fit. This enables you to tell me a little bit about what is going on for you and ask any questions that you might have.
Payment is taken via bank transfer on the day of the session.
I have a 24 hours cancellation policy. If you cancel your session with less than 24 hours notice, unfortunately you will still be charged for it.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how counselling works, or to arrange a free introductory call. This enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of coming to counselling, whether it could be helpful for you and whether I am the right therapist to help.
You can also call me on 07526 624089 if you would prefer to leave a message or speak to me first. I am happy to discuss any queries or questions you may have prior to arranging an initial appointment.
All enquires are usually answered within 24 hours, and all contact is strictly confidential.
